Series notes:
The original Act under which provisions these photographs were taken, was the Defacement of Property Act 1898 (amended by 1935, 1957, 1963 and 1971 Acts of the same name). The photographs in this series document signs that were to be considered under this act as they had been constructed and placed without formal approval. The Defacement of property covered a number of actions, and signage was one of these. As photographs they provide a snap shot of Tasmanian roadsides, reserves and other public places, particularly those that were tourist locations. The Act was repealed in 2005.

Administered by the Scenery Preservation Board until the regulations under the Act changed in 1973 to make the activity a function of the State's tourism department
