Series notes:
The Department established a new file classification system in 1974 and despite some revisions (see AB934 and AB935) it remained in use until 1991, when some files were top-numbered into yet another system. there were 9 major categories in the system, numbered 1-8 and EL (exploration licences) and some of the categories were further subdivided, as follows: 1. Legislation 2. Drilling 3.Chemistry Laboratory - located in Launceston, most of the correspondence related to its daily operations and was approved for destruction when the lab was closed 4.Lease licence enquiries - 40 Forfeiture and objections 400 Warden of Mines hearings 41 Lease applications 420 Exploration tender areas 44 Petroleum T number P exploration permit (area worked) 5. Mining - 50 Certificates of competency 500 Equipment and safety 6. Geology 7. speeches and brifeings 8. Explosives EL Exploration licences - these are numbered EL Number/Year but EL is not always stamped on cover and some are re-numbered 420 files (with both numbers on the file cover). These files relate to non-current licences (or are the closed parts of current licence files) and are cross referenced to exploration reports held in the Mines Division Library. the above numbers are sometimes further subdivided by decimal points (see AB933 for details) then followed by an oblique stroke and a unique number for each file.~

These records are part of the holdings of the Tasmanian Archives
