There are 18 primary categories within which each file receives a number and is further divided (chronologically) into numbered parts. Of the 18 primary categories originally used in this series, 3 were not present at the time of transfer to the Archives Office of Tasmania. Two had become separate series (at least in practice) and the origin and disposition of the other was not known to staff then working in the Environment Division. The categories are as follows:

18 Departmental Prosecution. Correspondence with Industry on environmental, monitoring and pollution issues, originally part of this series, is now to be found in series AC249 and the related licencing files are in series AC250.
