There are 41 main subject headings each assigned a number eg.1 - Accounts, 7 - Boards etc. Within these divisions there are other cards with sub-headings organised alphabetically and with sub-numbers. Each of these cards then has some three tiered numbers which lead to the numerical sequence (AD332) with the Departments transfer (archive) number and therefore to the correspondence in ED183. Occasionally the transfer (archive) number is found on these cards. Where there are current file numbers assigned (current at the time of the cards) eg.14/6/37, the Dept of Education can search on its system to get the most current number eg.335. Files with the archive numbers 1 - 8000 are in ED183. Files with numbers above 8000 are retained by the Department and permission must be obtained from the Department to access them.~
