How to Use:
This series only contains wills where probate has been granted. In Tasmania, there is no need for a will to go to probate - only if the holder of an asset requires it. If the executor can call in all the assets, then there is no need for probate. The Land Data Registration Branch will always want it when land is involved and a bank may if there is a sum greater than approx $20,000 involved. A will can go to probate if there is a dispute among beneficiaries and the same is the case with Letters of Administration. (Information from Probate Registry).

Individual copies of wills have been digitised and are available to view by going to the "Tasmanian Names Index" at http://linctas.ent.sirsidynix.net.au/client/en_AU/names and searching by name.
Series notes:
Bound copies of wills recording date probate granted.

For the files numbered 1 (AD960/1) to 46072 (AD960/98) a summary of the details relating to the granting of probate is transcribed onto the page, and preceeds the copy of the will.

For those files numbered 46073 (AD960/99) to 82110 (AD960/207) a copy of the will is the only item in the volume, often there is a stamp on the reverse of the will that outlines the details of the granting of probate.

For all of these files the original of the order granting probate is contained in the relevant AE241 file.

For those files numbered 82111 and greater (AD960/207 onwards) a copy of the order granting probate has been bound into the volume after the copy of the will.

These records are part of the holdings of the Tasmanian Archives
