Series notes:
This series comprises a handwritten card index to colonial Tasmanian Government records and colonial newspapers compiled by Amelia Lucy Wayn during the period from the 1920s to 1940s. They were then added to by staff employed in the Archives Office in the 1950s. The records indexed include Governor's Office Despatches and Correspondence of the Colonial Secretary's Office prior to 1856.

Miss Wayn was employed to arrange and index Tasmanian archival records as part of the Historical Record of Australia project and joint Commonwealth and State funding was obtained for the work. At that time the records were held by the Chief Secretary's Department, which employed her.

These records are part of the holdings of the Tasmanian Archives
System of Arrangement:
Alphabetical by name and/or subject. Amelia Wayn's idiosyncrasies in the use of card headings, sub-headings and card numbering have been retained. All cards on a particular subject or person should be looked at rather than relying on the cards being totally chronological or alphabetically ordered.;;The cards contain certain abbreviations for series of records indexed and for newspapers - ID is a reference to a series of inward despatches to the Governor (GO1 and sometimes related despatch series GO2 or 3); OD is a reference to the series of outward despatches to the Governor (GO33); E, Panel E or C/Arthur is a reference to the correspondence of the Colonial Secretary (CSO1). Newspaper references are from the Hobart Town Gazette; Hobart Town Advertisre; HobartTown Courier; Launceston Advertiser; Colonial Times; Cornwall Chronicle; Colonial Advocate; Mercury; Tasmanian Times and Guardian - usually referenced in abbreviated form. The printed published H.R.A. (Historical Records of Australia - Series 1 (NSW) and Series 111 (Tasmania) are also quoted references. As she did genalogical research for private enquirers copies of her answers are often found in the old AOT correspondence files and personal infomation verbally given to her by these enquirers is sometimes entered on her cards.;;
