In 1977 the agency commissioned research work which resulted in the compilation of three volumes of notes on people, buildings, structures and general subjects relating to the development and decline of Port Arthur. In 1979 these notes were reorganised by the agency but the content remained unchanged.

Volume 1 comprises general subject notes in alphabetical order and which are indexed at the beginning of the volume. Appendix 1 of this volume contains a name index with brief references. Volumes 2 and 3 comprise notes on buildings and other structures organised numerically with a list of their inventory numbers at the beginning of volume 2. This series is sometimes referred to as the 'Glover Papers' as the research work was undertaken by Margaret Glover.
