Alfred Abbott's diary, dated August 1858 to July 1861. The diary offers a vivid picture of social life in mid-19th century Hobart, as seen as seen through the eyes of an intelligent and observant young man who was deeply interested and involved in his family and friends, his church, his work as a watchmaker, scientific and technological developments of the day, and, perhaps most significantly, his hobby of photography, in which he and his friends were Tasmanian pioneers. The WL Crowther Library holds the original photograph album to which the diary frequently refers (C5674), as well as Alfred Abbott's notebook describing the photographs.
