Series notes:
Examples of conditional pardons for Tasmanian convicts. The condition of these pardons differs depending on the individual. The items in this series illustrate the variation of the conditions imposed - for example remaining in Tasmania for the unexpired part of a sentence, not returning to the United Kingdom for the remainder of the sentence, or restricting the holder for the rest of their life to the Australasian colonies or New Zealand. Most of the documents are parchment (though some are paper) and are signed by the Lieutenant-Governor and bear the colonial seal. Pardons from different administration periods are in slightly different formats. Some include descriptions of the convict, while others also include details of the original sentence. The certificates in this series are likely to have been given to the convict as evidence of their release. A number is given to each pardon with this number recorded in the convict's conduct record. This would allow cross checking regarding the authenticity of the pardon. While useful to show how the administration processed pardons, these documents include no additional information to that in a convict's conduct record.

The items in consignment 4 (CON62/4) are missing the lower part, containing the seal, the Lieutenant-Governor's and the Colonial Secretary's signatures on the pardon. The reason for this mutilation is unclear.

These records are part of the holdings of the Tasmanian Archives
