Series notes:
This series was commenced by the Secretary of State "in order to preserve a due distinction in the directions which you shall receive for the expenditure of Money in the encouragement of Emigration". The despatches authorise the Lieutenant Governor to make advances to ships masters and agents in respect to immigrants and give particulars of the persons concerned; name trade, age and family are included. An index to the 400 odd families that arrived under this scheme has been compiled - see onlineTasmanian Names Index and Arrivals Index - LINC Tasmanian Reading Room.

These records are part of the holdings of the Tasmanian Archives
System of Arrangement:
In the basement of Franklin Square, Miss Wayn of the Chief Secretarys Dept had 115 volumes of despatches received by the Governor between 1823 and Dec 1856 stored on Panel D. The 115 volumes of Inward Despatches comprised four separate series (GO1. GO2, GO3, GO17). The numbers in the description field are the numbers used by Miss Wayn in her precis book (AE713) and identified as ID on the Wayn index cards (AE807)
