Series notes:
William Newson Ling (1817-1883) of George Street, Launceston, was appointed as an extra pilot for the Launceston Marine Board in 1853. He was promoted to the position of Harbourmaster in 1857, which he held until his death on 7 July 1883. The pilot's certificate is signed by Sir William Denison and the Colonial Secretary.
