Series notes:
Photographs of prominent Tasmanians, particularly those from the north of the State. Includes a number of works from the Launceston Mechanics' Institute Portrait Gallery established c.1860. Dates given for the items in this series are mostly approximate. They are based on the active period of the creating photographer. Where items are photographs of original art works, the date given is the date that the photograph of the artwork would have likely been created. Many items are called overpainted photographs. This is a technique where a photographic print is enhanced/modified to add colour or detail. In most cases the original photographer is different to the person undertakng the overpainting.
