Series notes:
The Harbour Master's 'Removal Books' initially recorded the date, rig, name of vessel, tonnage, particulars of removal, name of vessel's master (aka requisionist), name of harbour master (aka officer) and date of removal. The particulars of removal would usually be recorded as 'wharf to wharf' or 'wharf to stream' or 'stream to sea' etc. Later registers record the name of the particular wharf used.

Other details later recorded in the registers included the date of duty and the number of removals (or movements in the harbour) which were added in 1851. A remarks column was added in 1871 which from 1889 until 1916 recorded monthly summaries of arrivals and departures by number of vessels and tonnage. This column was increasingly used after this for recording destination details for vessels. After 1946 the date of duty and number of removes columns were usually left blank. In 1954 the registers also began recording gross and net tonnage, number of crew and passengers, pilot's name when relevant and agent.

These records are part of the holdings of the Tasmanian Archives
