Most of the registers are alphabetical by the name of the correspondent. They record and register the inward letter and only rarely state the number of the file on which the letter was placed. The registers which are not alphabetical are MIN 4/1-4 and MIN 4/7-10. MIN 4/1-2 registers the correspondence by year e.g. letter number 162 of 1893 is registered 93/162. MIN 4/3-4 and MIN 4/7-11 (front part of 11 only) register the correspondence by including the number of the register in the reference e.g. letter number 722 of 1898 registered in register volume No. 9 (Mines Department number) is 9/722. Finally, MIN 4/5-6 and MIN 4/11-19 (back part of 11 only) register the correspondence with the volume number and the alphabetical division as a prefix e.g. letter number 179 from Mr Brown registered in register volume 18 is 18/B/179.~
