Description:
George Thomas William Blamey Boyes (1787-1853), public servant, diarist, and amateur watercolourist, was born at Stubbington, Hampshire, England. In 1823 he was appointed as deputy assistant commissary general in New South Wales, arriving in Sydney in January 1824. In November 1826 when the commissariat in Van Diemen's Land was separated from New South Wales, G.T.W.B. Boyes transferred to Hobart Town, and was appointed auditor of civil accounts, and later became colonial secretary. He was outwardly known for his gentle nature and agreeable manners, however the journals and letters he kept during this time reveal his deep insecurities, intense frustrations and bitter opinions of the colony and its residents. ;;Boyes and fellow public servant William Porden Kay formed part of a sketching group initiated by John Skinner Prout. They served on the organising committee led by Prout to organise Hobart's major exhibition in 1845. He died in Hobart, on 16th August, 1853.;;
