Description:
Andrew and Hannah Gatenby arrived in Tasmania in 1823 with 4 sons (Christopher, George, John and William) and 3 daughters (Sarah, Nancy and Mary Jane). Andrew was granted 1500 acres (607 ha) which he selected on the Pennyroyal Creek (Isis River) and named Barton. By 1825 the Gatenby family had erected a substantial flour-mill, using millstones they had brought with them to the colony, and cut a canal and banked a reservoir to supply the mill with water from the Isis River. This mill served the surrounding district for fifty years. They built the Barton homestead by 1828.;;;;In recognition of the substantial improvements, additional land was given the family in 1825, 1826 and 1828. They won further land when son, George, successfully fought a bushranger attack.;;;;Andrew Gatenby died at Barton on 18 August 1848 aged 77. His wife Hannah lived to 100 and died in 1878.;;;;George Gatenby, son of Andrew and Hannah, married Mary Ann Corney in 1830. They had 6 children, Robert (1832-1875), Hannah, Mary Jane, George, Edith and Catherine.;;
