Description:
In 1905 a non - sectarian charity was formed that came to be known as the Tasmanian Sanatorium Association. They were granted an occupation licence for 12 acres fronting Creek Road on the site of the New Town Charitable Institution. They erected buildings, equipped, staffed and operated a Sanatorium for the treatment of tuberculosis (consumption) (Tasmanian Consumptive Sanatorium).;;In 1944 discussions were held between the Commonwealth and the States to plan a co-ordinated national campaign to eradicate tuberculosis. Recognising that a State wide campaign needed to be under a single unified control the Executive Committee decided to hand control of the Sanatorium to the Government.;;Following the hand over of the building, occupation licence, equipment and staff to the Government the society re- named itself the Tasmanian Sanatoria After Care Association establishing in 1946 an after care institution at Narryna in Hampden Road, Battery Point. Narryna operated as a hostel for people able to be discharged from the Northern or Tasmanian Chest Hospitals but not fit to go home.;;;;The activities of the Association declined in the 1960s as the disease was gradually eliminated in the Tasmanian population.;;;;;;Previously Tasmanian Consumptives Sanatorium (1905 - 1928/29) and Tasmanian Sanatorium (1928/29 - 1944)
