Description:
Ernest (Ernie) Bond was born in Hobart 26 Jul 1891 to Frank Bond and his wife Sarah Emma Cowburn. Frank (1856 - 1931) was a politician, first in the House of Assembly (1903 - 1906) and the Legislative Council (1909 - 1921).;;;;Ernie Bond is remembered for having lived at Gordonvale in the Rasselas Valley from 1927 until 1952, when he gave his property to the Hobart and Launceston Walking Clubs for the use of bushwalkers. Sadly the property no longer exists.. Thirty miles from Maydena among tall gum trees on the banks of the River Gordon, access to Gordonvale was via the Adamsfield Track from Junee until the Australian Newsprint Mills constructed a road into the Florentine Valley.;;;;Although living mostly a hermit existence, Ernie was a large, bearded genial bushman and lover of nature and wildlife who became legendary for the hospitality he offered to all bush walkers. ;;;;When he retired back to Hobart he was remembered for selling fruit and vegetables from a roadside stall in the Austin's Ferry area. He died in Hobart aged 70 on the 1 May 1962.
