Description:
The Womens International League For Peace And Freedom (WILPF) was founded at the Hague in 1915. Before the Second World War there were branches in almost every State of Australia including Tasmania. The Tasmanian branch, founded in 1920, was in fact the first Australian Branch to be formed. This branch closed in 1942. In November 1963 about 30 women met in Hobart to reform the Tasmanian branch. Inspiration for reformation came from Dr Mildred Thynne, a Quaker from England who had recently retired. The first Secretary was Bronwen Meredith and other members included Linda Heaven, Irene Isles, Edith Emery, Eve Masterman, Lesley Alcorso, Doreen Shenman, Audrey Moore, Doreen Batey, and Valerie Nichols.;;WILPF is a "feminist peace-building organisation of volunteer activists, anti-war, non-profit, and non-aligned. The League brings women together to oppose conflict, violence and global militarisation, and provides a unique space where peace activists across Australia and internationally can link together" (WILPF website).
