Description:
The Council was formed in 1962 when Tasmania had the highest rate of hydatids in Australia and New Zealand. The Tasmanian Hydatids Eradication Council (THEC) was given a government grant in 1963 and acted as an advisory body for the Department of Agriculture which prepared a statewide control programme, largely following the New Zealand model. THEC ceased to function in 1996, with the monitoring role being placed in the charge of the Public Health Department, which formed the Ministerial Advisory Committee on the Eradication of Hydatids in 1991
