Description:
The Trustees were responsible for disbursing the surplus funds allocated to the dominions and colonies at the end of World War I by the Joint Committee of the British Red Cross and the Order of St John of Jerusalem. They did so in three ways.;;;;The Trust funded the construction of a Psychopathic Home at Millbrook Rise in New Norfolk which the State then staffed and ran although the Board, which controlled admissions, included representatives of the Trust and gave preference to veterans. ;;;;The Trust also funded construction of a retirement/nursing home for veterans at St Johns Park known as Gellibrand House. Again the State assumed responsibility for staffing and running the Home but the Trust was represented on the Board of Management.;;;;Throughout its existence the Trust paid medical and hospital bills of veterans in straightened circumstances and when the remaining Trustees were unable to find volunteers to replace them in the 1960s the Trust was assigned to a trustee company. Such payments having ceased the company applied to the Supreme Court to wind up the Trust and remaining funds were allocated to the Florence Nightingale Home as the only surviving institution with similar aims not already funded by the State.
