Description:
The Florence Nightingale Society was established to care for aged or incapacitated nurses. The Florence Nightingale Memorial Home Company was formed by two nursing organisations, the Returned Sisters Association and the Florence Nightingale Society. A Home was established at 102 Montpelier, then at 25 Fitzroy Place as a memorial to all nurses. In July 1965 the Home was re-established at 3 Lasswade Avenue, Dynnyrne. By 1987 the Returned Sisters had ceased ro function and the Society was a small number of elderly nurses. Due to changes in government policy, funding and the fact that the home needed extensive alterations and renovations, the home was sold in 1991. The Society then moved to 23 Parliament Street, Sandy Bay, before winding up in late 2011.
