Description:
Printer and publisher Henry Dowling (1810-1885) was the eldest son of the Reverend Henry Dowling (1780-1869), Tasmania's first Baptist Minister, and brother of the artist Robert Hawker Dowling (1827-1885). Henry Dowling (printer) arrived in Hobart Town in 1830 and succeeded J. P. Fawkner as proprietor of the Launceston Advertiser in 1831. He was Mayor of Launceston from 1857 to 1861 and a member for Launceston in the House of Assembly from 31 May 1861 to 1 November 1862. He also had a son, Henry Dowling, who kept diaries of his life in Northern Tasmania in the 1850s and 1860s.;;
