Description:
Colonial family. Joseph Tice Gellibrand was a lawyer and appointed attorney-general in Van Diemen's Land in 1824 until his removal from office in 1826. He continued to practice law and was later involved in the Port Phillip Association. He was married to Isabella Kerby and they had nine children. Of these, Walter Angus Bethune, Thomas Lloyd and William St Paul Gellibrand became members of parliament. A son, Joseph Tice Gellibrand, became a church minister and was the father of Sir John Gellibrand, noted soldier.;;Sir John Gellibrand (1872-1945), soldier and farmer, was born at Lleintwardeine, Ouse, Tasmania, son of Thomas Lloyd Gellibrand, grazier, landowner and parliamentarian, and his wife Isabella BrownAfter his father died in 1874, he travelled to England with his mother and six siblings. He was educated in England and Germany before commencing a military career with a commission as a second lieutenant in the South Lancashire Regiment in 1893. He was promoted lieutenant in 1895, having the previous year qualified as an interpreter in German and French. He married Elizabeth Helena Breul on 27 July 1894 in Yorkshire. Elizabeth and John went on to have three children (Joan Elizabeth 1900-, Thomas Ianson 1908-1981; Cynthia).;;Gellibrand was active in the South African War, after which he was posted to Ceylon as deputy assistant adjutant and quartermaster general. After only a few years he resigned his commission and was gazetted out of the army. He returned to Tasmania in June 1912;;He bought an orchard at Risdon and settled there with his Elizabeth and their children in February 1913.;;In WWI he was appointed to the administrative staff of the 1st Australian Division as deputy adjutant and quartermaster general and was promoted major. In 1915, after serving at Gallipoli, he was promoted lieutenant-colonel and was appointed commander of the 6th Infantry Brigade, and promoted to Colonel. At the end of May 1918, Gellibrand was promoted major general and succeeded Lieutenant-General Sir John Monash as the commander of the 3rd Division, overseeing the final operations along the Somme from Hamel to the Hindenburg line.;;He returned to his farm at Risdon in 1919, but soon took up the post of Tasmanian public service commissioner. He was briefly in this role before moving to Victoria to take up the role of chief commissioner of police from 1920 to 1922.;;Back in Tasmania he played a key role in the Legacy movement and the founding of the Remembrance Club in Hobart in 1922. At the end of 1925 Gellibrand was elected to the House of Representatives as the Nationalist member for Denison. He was defeated at the general elections of 1928, and again in 1929. For the next eight years he worked at Risdon, and in ran Garth, a property near Smithton. In 1937, he relocated to the property Balaclava, at Murrindindi, near Yea, Victoria, nearer to his locally based son.;;Gellibrand played a consultative role to political figures in the lead up to Australia's engagement in WWII. He also wrote papers and spoke at recruiting meetings. Sir John Gellibrand died at Balaclava, Murrindindi, on 3 June 1945 and was buried in Yea cemetery. Lady Gellibrand died in 1949.
