Henry March Elliott was born in Hobart in 1853 and was first appointed as pupil teacher in the Education Department in January 1867. In 1871 he was appointed to Mercantile Marine and in 1881 assisted in the Tasmanian census. In January 1882 he was apppointed engrossing clerk in the Mines Department where he rose to become Registrar of Mines in January 1898. In July of that year he was appointed Chairman of Examiners of merchant ships' officers. He died in June 1914.;;
