The Meals on Wheels Association - Hobart was formed at an inaugural meeting on the 2nd August 1956, with the objective to assist in the welfare of the aged. In the first year, 1957, over 2,400 meals were delivered to clients who, because of illness or infirmity, were housebound. The initial price of a meal was 3 shillings and by 1965 over 5,000 meals were being delivered annually within the Hobart Association area. This rose to over 22,000 in 1967. In 1975 several smaller branches of Meals on Wheels were formed from within the Hobart Association area.;;;;In 1970 there were 5 main associations: Hobart, Burnie, Devonport, Glenorchy and Portland and St Helens. The inaugural meeting to form the Meals on Wheels Association of Tasmania was held in Campbell Town on the 6th March 1971. Volunteers today operate branches in cities and towns throughout Tasmania.
