Description:
The minutes of the Melbourne branch of the Alliance Francaise show that a branch of the organisation in Hobart was functioning by 1916. By 1934 however, support for the Alliance had dwindled leaving only five members in the Hobart organisation. ;;In late 1933, the Le Cercle Francias (French Circle) was formed in Hobart. By 1937 the French Circle was flourishing with approximately 20 regular members and it was decided that it should form itself into a branch of the Alliance Francaise (the existence of the predecessor notwithstanding). The group took steps to get formal approval from Paris, which in due course was granted.
