John Swan (1796-1858) was a colonial businessman who ran a large haberdashery business. He lived in Beaulieu, Rupert Avenue, North Hobart. John Swan and his wife Mary Ann Cameron (1800-1869) had migrated from England together with their four daughters per the LUSITANIA in 1823. Together they had ten more children in Tasmania - five boys and five girls. Several of their daughters were educated at Ellenthorpe Hall in Ross. Jane Swan (1818-1870) married solicitor Arthur Perry in 1839 and lived at Secheron, Hobart. Mary Anne [Polly]Swan (1819-1893) married Launceston merchant James Raven (d.1857, VIC) in 1840. Polly and James travelled to England in 1847. Catherine Swan (1823-1896) married merchant Thomas Daniel Chapman in 1843. They resided at 'Sunnyside' at New Town. Maria Swan (1824-1914) married William Edward Nairn. Harriet Swan (1826-1853) married Lieutenant Edmund Isdell in 1850 (who was stationed for a time at Eaglehawk Neck). Harriet and Edmund had a son Harry Edmond (b.1853) and a daughter Mary Kate Louisa. Harriet died of scarlet fever in 1853. Louisa Phillia Swan (1828-) married Melbourne based merchant Leader Stevenson in 1847. Emily Anne Swan (1830-1887) moved to London and never married. John Swan Jnr (1832-1885) was educated at Queens School, Macquarie Street before being sent to UK to finish his schooling. Returning to Tasmania in 1852 he went on to become High Sherriff and Inspector of Police. John married Jane Campbell in 1857 and they had ten children. Julia Susan Swan (1834 -1853) died of scarlet fever aged just 19. Charles Cameron Swan [Charlie] (1836-1904) bordered at Christ College near Hagley and attended Hobart High School. Charlie married Georgiana Ann Read in 1858. They lived at Dunedin, St Leonards. Amy Swan (1838-1911) married George Stevenson in 1856. George and Amy moved to Victoria. The Swans three youngest sons all remained unmarried. Arthur Swan (1839-1882) died aged just 43. George James Swan (1841-1892) died aged 50, and Edward Daniel [Eddie] (1843-1902) died aged 59. Mary Jessica Hume married dairy farmer Raymond Swan in 1927 (he was related to Charles Cameron Swan). Mary Swan had a regular column in The Examiner (Launceston) in 1947 called 'Rustica'. Mary Jessica Hume's parents were Ada Beasley and Geoff Hume. The Humes migrated to Longford, Tasmania, in the early 1900s from Brixton London.
