John and Catharine Augusta (nee Keast) Mitchell of Lisdillon and others. John Mitchell was born on 1 September 1812 in Plymouth and arrived in Tasmania in 1837. He was employed in the government service and later elected as Member of Parliament in 1872. In 1839 he married Catherine Keast at Hobart Town and together they had ten children, seven sons and three daughters. The first two sons died in infancy (in 1840 and 1842) and were buried on the Isle of the Dead, Port Arthur. The next two sons, Frederick (born 1843) and Frank (born 1845) were sent to England in 1858 to be educated, but in 1861 Frederick died. Frank spent the rest of his life in England. The remaining children included: Catherine or 'Kate' (born 1847), Edwin (1848), Paul (1850) who died in infancy, Mark (1851), Sarah (1853) and Amy (1855). ;;John and Catharine Mitchell spent many decades living on the East Coast of Tasmania. John died 16 November 1880 and Catharine died 10 November 1899.
