James Barnard (c1809 - 1897) , born Hackney, London was apprenticed in his father's printing firm in 1825. In 1838 he was appointed the first government printer in Van Diemen's Land and arrived in Hobart Town in the 'Pyramus' with his wife (Charlotte, nee Fox) and twin sister (Helen Elizabeth Barnard) on 22 March 1839. He retained the post for the rest of his working life and lived at Surrey House, Macquarie Street (now demolished), in front of his printery. He retired in 1880, by which time he was widely esteemed both within the colony and further afield. He died aged 88 on 20 April 1897.;;;;He had five surviving children: Downes Martin Barnard (Launceston merchant); Marion (Mrs Rouse of Guntawong, nr Mudgee, NSW); Henry Sultzer Barnard (married Cozbi Zora); James Barnard (Secretary and Collector of Customs for Tasmania) and Dr Charles Edward Barnard (born Hobart 17 Feb 1850, died Melbourne 1927).;;;;Dr Charles Edward Barnard married Bertha Lilian Chamberlen (sic) in Launceston and had twin sons Geoffrey Charles Barnard and Charles Alston Barnard, born 1898. He studied medicine in Aberdeen, Scotland, was registered in Tasmania 8 April 1975. He eventually left Tasmania and practiced mainly in Victoria, but moved around rural areas including Gulgong (1876 - 1883), Geelong (around 1903), Sunbury and Adelaide (1911 - 1921) . He is buried in the Fawkner Cemetery, Melbourne.;;;;These papers were deposited by the grandson of Dr Charles Edward Barnard.
