Ernest (Ernie) Chalk was a member of the AIF in World War 1. His Grandson, David Chalk (1953-2002), , became interested in World War I through his grandfather's story. David collected memorabilia, artefacts and photographs relating particularly to the 4th Brigade. He also commenced an extensive oral history project to interview AIF servicemen throughout Australia and record their memories. David died in 2002 before this work could be finished. His family continued to support his research by lodging his records in various institutions and collections, including the Tasmanian Archives, Burnie Pioneer Museum and the Australian War Memorial.
