Description:
The Mountain Club first met on 29th July 1911. It was formed as a cooperative society and, indeed, was called the Hobart Cooperative Association until July 1912. The club was constituted for a period of five years during which time the members' monthly contributions of 10 shillings each were invested. All monies were then not returned to members until this five year period had expired.;;;;According to the club's Secretary RA Black the initial impetus for its formation was the perceived disadvantage of consumers to tradesmen. In its early stages the club purchased goods from London at a reduced rate. However, this aspect in time was dropped in favour of investing the funds in shares and cash.;;;;Membership was kept deliberately small with ten foundation members: J Adams, RA Black, CHD Chepmell, FW Grueber, SH Grueber, RC Harvey, FJ Heyward, E Rodway, W Smithies and M Susman. Three subsequently joined, namely J Smithies, CN Hope and B Walker. A requirement for membership was that individuals were and remained residents of Tasmania. On average seven meetings were held each year and members were given the opportunity to present a paper on a subject for which they had some personal knowledge. Topics proved to be wide ranging.;;;;Social events were also held though with the onset of World War 1 these were dropped. In keeping with the club's name, bushwalks were also held to various places in the state though it appears that not all participated.;;;;At the time of its winding up in August 1916 investments worth in excess of 310 pounds were divided amongst members based upon their period of membership.
