Clive Loftus-Hills (1885-1967), geologist, was born in Deloraine, Tasmania. Educated at Launceston Church Grammar School and the University of Tasmania, Loftus-Hill went on to become government geologist and director of the Geological Survey, Tasmania. He published many important geological works, with his work greatly influencing the operations of the Read-Rosebery and Zeehan mining fields, as well as coal exploration in Tasmania. In 1924 he received the first science doctorate awarded by the University of Tasmania. During the 1920s to mid 1940s Loftus-Hill worked on the mainland in a range of chemist and geological roles. Returning to Tasmania in 1946, Loftus-Hill worked there for the next two decades as a consultant geologist and mining entrepreneur. In 1950 he was elected to the Hobart City Council. ;;Loftus-Hill married Jessie Adelaide Dean in 1908, together they had two sons. In 1916 he joined the Australian Imperial Force, undertaking active duty in France. He died in Melbourne in 1967.
