Hans Christian Bjelke-Petersen was born in Copenhagen, Denmark on 14 April 1872. The novelist, Marie Caroline Bjelke-Petersen, was his sister. The family migrated to Tasmania in 1892, settling first at 'Napoli', Berriedale. Hans first established a physical training institute in Hobart and later, with his brother Harald, one in Sydney. He was appointed Director of Physical Training for the Commonwealth Military Forces of Australia, 1911-1914. After World War I he continued his work in physical training and died 23 May 1964, at Eaglehawk Neck, Tasmania. ;;Marie died at Lindisfarne, Hobart on 11 October 1969.;;Other members of the family include Johannes and George.;;Hans & Marie's nephew Johannes (Joh) became Premier of Queensland in 1968.
