Hans Christian Bjelke-Petersen was born in Copenhagen, Denmark on 14 April 1872. The novelist, Marie Caroline Bjelke-Petersen, was his sister. The family migrated to Tasmania in 1892, settling first at 'Napoli', Berriedale. Hans first established a physical training institute in Hobart and later, with his brother Harald, one in Sydney. He was appointed Director of Physical Training for the Commonwealth Military Forces of Australia, 1911-1914. After World War I he continued his work in physical training and died 23 May 1964, at Eaglehawk Neck, Tasmania. Marie died at Lindisfarne, Hobart on 11 October 1969. Other members of the family include Johannes and George. Hans & Marie's nephew Johannes (Joh) became Premier of Queensland in 1968.
