Object of the organisation was to 'unite persons engaged in library work and to improve the standard of librarianship and the status of the library profession in Australia'. Members in each state constituted a branch. Tasmanian foundation members were: J. D. A. Collier, E. B. Bailey, M. E. Fulton, E. B. John and T. F. Masters (Tasmanian Public Library, J. R. Forward (launceston Public Library) and E. M. Miller, University Library). ;;
