STRZELECKI, explorer and geologist, was born 20 July 1797 at Gluszyna, Western Poland. In 1839 he travelled to Sydney and then the Australian Alps where he named Mt Kosciuszko after the Polish democratic leader Tadeusz Kosciuszko. Strzelecki later went to Van Diemen's Land, where he became a close friend of the Franklins and did important work as an explorer, geologist, and scientific farmer, and like the earlier Lhotsky made analyses of coal deposits. He was based in Launceston from 1840-1842 and explored much of Van Diemen's Land during this period.
