Description:
Robert Norman Stone, known as Norm Stone, was born in Footscray, Melbourne on 5 December 1918 to Robert and Lila Stone. Robert was an iron moulder and had married Lila Bailey in 1916. After leaving school Norm tried various short-term jobs before enrolling in a radio course run by Melbourne Technical College. He was successful in acquiring his radio operator's certificate. Through a friend he heard that a Mr Gill Miles was wanting an assistant to set up 7HT in Hobart. He got the job arriving in Hobart, in 1937, with his mother. He left the radio station in 1962 to work with the ABC in charge of Props. Most of the sets used in early local dramas were set up by Norm. He retired in Dec 1983. Following his retirement, he helped his friend Peru Terts in his audio engineering business. This involved late nights of measuring ambient sound levels in buildings, parks etc. Around 1990, following an invite from his friend Gwen D'Emden, Norm joined the Sound Preservation Association where he catalogued all books, circuit drawings, theatre programmes, and information relating to all aspects of sound.
