Arch Newton was born in Preston, Victoria in 1891, and was living in Launceston when he enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force on 8 January 1915, in Hobart. He was present at the landing at Anzac Cove, Gallipoli on 25 April 1915. He was a member of the 12th Battalion, 3rd Brigade, 1st Australian Division. He was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal on 3 June 1919 and was discharged from the army on 21 August 1919. He died in Victoria in 1959 aged 67.
