John Leslie Gray was born on the 11th May 1947 in Hobart; the son of Alan Leslie Gray and Edith May (nee McGurk) who married at Macquarie Plains, Tasmania on the 4 November 1933. John Gray was a Building Designer who lived at 2 Derwent Street, Brighton from where he ran his general engineering and architectural drafting service, which included home design and plans; house extensions and structural steel detailing. It was called "All Purpose Drafting". Following his death in 2005 his hand-drawn architectural plans were acquired by TAHO as an example of the way plans were drafted before the advent of computerisation. The plans are from projects in Hobart and the surrounding greater suburban and rural areas.
