Stephen Spurling III was a prolific landscape and commercial photographer, with the largest studio in northern Tasmania from the turn of the century until 1937. Notable amongst his output are landscapes of Tasmanian wilderness areas.

Spurling was a third generation photographer, his grandfather having established a studio in Hobart in the 1860s. Stephen Spurling II moved to Launceston to operate a branch of his father's business and operated independently from 1875.
Spurling III took photos for his father as early as 1894 and officially joined the business in 1902. His best work probably dates from 1913-1930. He sold his business to Kodak in 1937.
