Marie Maumill was born in 1928, the daughter of Mr Leslie James Maumill and Mrs Maumill. She showed an interest in acting whilst a pupil at St Mary's in 1939 and at Sacred Heart in 1941. Miss Maumill was a member of Catholic Youth Circle presnting a Revue in 1944. She was also a member of Youth Players, an amateur dramatic group in Launceston, and appeared in several plays during the 1950's.
