Donald Hutton was born in New Zealand and completed his MSc in physics at the Canterbury University in 1961. He completed his PhD at Monash during 1962 - 1964. He returned to Monash in 1969. Don is remembered not only as a physicist but also for his love of the mountains and as a conservationist. Following the painful loss of Lake Pedder, Don with others campaigned successfully against the damming of the Franklin River. Around 1975 he was a member of the first group to kayak down the Franklin River.;;;;;;
