William Gilbert McKenzie, born at Launceston on 11 February 1879, was the youngest child of Thomas McKenzie and his wife Ann Morice Ricketts. William was a carter or carrier. He served in the 2nd Battalion Tasmanian Infantry Regiment from May 1897 to October 1898. In 1901 he joined the Launceston Volunteer Artillery as a gunner. From October 1907 until August 1914 he was a Bombadier then Sergeant with the Australian Field Artillery, Launceston.;;;;On 27 August 1914 William enlisted as a Gun Sergeant with the 9th Battery, 3rd Australian Field Artillery Brigade in the First AIF, departing from Hobart on the 'Geelong' in October 1914. He served in Egypt, Gallipoli and France. He arrived home on 26 November 1918; the last entry in the diary. In 1922 he was awarded the Colonial Auxiliary Forces Long Service Medal. ;;;;William married Harriett Maria Gould on 2 April 1919 at St John's Church, Launceston. They had at least three children: Charles Gilbert (1920-2003); Margaret Louise and Saidie Ann. William died aged 69 on 18 August 1947.
