John Batman, pioneer of Melbourne, the son of a convict, was born in New South Wales on 21 January 1801. In 1821 he moved to Van Diemen's Land, took up land at 'Kingston' near Ben Lomond, supplied meat to the government stores and established the first settlement at Port Phillip in 1835.;;;;He married Eliza Thompson (Callaghan) and had seven daughters and one son. John Batman died aged 38 on 6 May 1839 after a protracted illness.
