Huntley James Clarke was the son of James Mallard Clarke who was born in Stonehouse, Plymouth, England and came to Tasmania in 1859 aged 19. He gained employment with the Government Survey Department where he worked for nearly 60 years as well as also being one-time Secretary to the Fisheries Commission; Assistant Clerk to the House of Assembly; teacher of mathematics at the Hutchins School; a member of the Masonic Order and the Volunteer Brigades. He was the younger son of Major-General James Clarke of the Royal Marines. On 6 April 1867 he married Mary Louisa Huston, the third daughter of G. F. Huston Esq, Medical Superintendent of Hospital for the Insane, New Norfolk. Their children were Jeanette Mary (born 1868 - never married), Huntley James (born 1869), Blanche Emily (born 1871), Cecil George (born 1872), Margaret Alston (born 1875 - never married) and Ethel Eleanor (born 1877). James Mallard Clarke died on the 20 September 1927 at his residence No 1 Bayley Street, Glebe, Hobart, in his 88th year. ;;Huntley James Clarke OBE, was an engineer and surveyor. He worked for the government in the Public Works Department and later at Queenstown on the West Coast, employed as Engineer for Supplies for the Mt Lyell Mining and Railway Company. He was also a government representative on the Strahan Marine Board, chaired the Queenstown Hospital Board and was a member of the local Queenstown Council. He was awarded an OBE in June 1945 for services rendered to the West Coast community.;;James Huntley Clarke married Kate Arnett in July 1900. They had seven children. He died on 9 December 1955.;;
