Hugh Marsden Gibbs, aviator, was born in London on 11 May 1889 to William Gibbs, (1840-1933), assistant brewer, and Ellen Mathews. He was educated at the City of London Boys School. At the outbreak of War in 1914 he joined the Bedfordshire Regiment and in August 1916 transferred to the Royal Flying Corps, firstly as an observer and later as a pilot. He was shot down over Belgium in April 1918, but survived severe burns.;;;;Hugh Gibbs married Dorothy Chinn and had four children in England. In January 1928 the family migrated to a soldier settler farm at Katandra West, Victoria, where three more children were born. In 1936 Hugh took a refresher course as a pilot. In November 1936 he was appointed as Airport Manager, Western Junction. In 1938 he was Officer-in-Charge, Civil Aviation, Tasmania. During World War 2 he carried out flight inspections of Tasmanian Defence Area sites and Emergency Landing Grounds. He retired in 1954 after 18 years' service to civil aviation in Tasmania. Hugh died aged 65 on 17 January 1955 and was buried at Carr Villa.
