Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin was an English architect, designer and artist who had an influential role in establishing the Gothic Revival style. He was a personal friend of the first Roman Catholic Bishop of Hobart, Bishop Robert Willson, who brought some of Pugin's drawings with him to Van Diemen's Land. Pugin's work on religious buildings, ornaments and vestments can be seen throughout Tasmania.
