The Amos family first arrived in Australia on 15 March 1821, sailing into Hobart Town per the Emerald. John (1776 - 1848) and Adam (1774 - 1845) had previously been farmers in the lowland district of Gala Water, near Melrose and Gala Shiels in Scotland.;;John and Hannah Amos and their nine children: James, Ellen, John, Mary Ann, Martha, Caroline, Lavinia, Matilda and Adam resided at the property 'Cranbrook.' The township of Cranbrook took its name from John Amos's property. ;;Adam and Mary Amos had eight children: James, John, Adam, Margaret, Helen, Mary, Janet and Robert and they lived at the 'Glen Gala' estate. Adam was made District Constable in 1822. By 1824 Adam had a flour mill operating at Glen Gala. It supplied flour for the whole district. Before Adam's death in 1845 he divided his property into three units: Gala, Glen Heriot and the original Glen Gala. ;;Gala Kirk, the Presbyterian Church at Cranbrook was built by John Amos and his son James in 1845. Prior to the church being built church services were held in the Granary at Glen Gala. Reverend Thomas Dove was the first minister of the church. Gala Kirk was restored to celebrate the centenary of the arrival of John and Adam in Tasmania. The Amos family cemetery is located a short distance from the Glen Gala homestead. ;;
