Joseph and Judah Solomon, merchants, arrived in Sydney in 1820 as convicts aboard the Prince Regent and were sent in the Castle Forbes to Hobart Town. By January 1821 they had opened a general store at the corner of Liverpool and Argyle Streets, trading as J. & J. Solomon.;;In 1823 they were among the 200 foundation subscribers to the Bank of VDL although still convicts. The expanded their commercial interests and eventually Joseph moved to Launceston. Judah remained in Hobart and donated land and money to build a synagogue which was completed in 1845.;;
