Ralph Hope-Johnstone (1917-1989) was an engineer and photographer. He was born in Hobart to Cyril and Charlotte (formerly Scott). He attended the Hobart Junior Technical School and the Hobart Technical College, where he was awarded a Diploma in Electrical Engineering. He worked for the Hydro Electric Commission as an Electrical Draftsman and later as an Electrical Test Engineer. Ralph Hope-Johnstone was at the forefront of the campaign to save both Lake Pedder and, later, the Franklin River. He engineered Olegas Truchanas' famous audio-visual presentations on Pedder in the Hobart Town Hall, using the "faders"- a slide fade-out system that he invented. Ralph first walked into Lake Pedder in the 1940s and was on the first Brown and Dutreau tourist flight to the Pedder beach on Christmas Eve 1947.;;He married the artist Elspeth Vaughan in 1976.;;
